Career guidance is particularly important for struggling students or special needs learners because they may face unique challenges and require additional support to achieve their career goals. There are several careers beyond just going to University, and SEN students can have a chance of getting into a successful career if they are helped early on.
Career guidance can help these children identify their strengths, interests, and abilities and explore career options that suit their needs and abilities. Career guidance gives direction to children and makes them goal oriented. Helping SEN students identify their path keeps them focused on their learning and the subjects they should concentrate on.
Career guidance can help special needs students develop the skills and experience needed to succeed in the workforce and identify any accommodations or modifications necessary to support their success.
It can also help students understand their rights and responsibilities under disability laws and connect them with community resources and support services. Most struggling learners either drop out of high school or fail to find employment. Providing career guidance opens the gateway for students to reach out to others for help and find their path.
Career guidance can help special needs students achieve greater independence and self-sufficiency and improve their overall quality of life. Every student in our schools needs to have a successful life ahead. We, as educators, are responsible for not only our students’ schooling but their life success.
It can also promote greater understanding and inclusion in the workplace and broader society. Once SEN students are better prepared to enter the workforce, the workplace becomes more accommodating and open to having someone onboard who comes well-equipped despite their challenges.
